The Aliso Viejo Nia Blog

What is all this about no shoes?

Now, all of this got me thinking about shopping…feet…shoes…Nia…and autumn.

Yup, it’s time for you to think about maybe hitting the gym again…maybe signing-up for an exercise class… maybe even checking out some cool exercise wear for your Nia class… and maybe even some shoes ….

Shoes?

Yes, yes, of course we Nia teachers tell you that Nia is best done in bare feet…that we refer to the feet as “the hands that touch the earth”…that bare feet help you with balance and coordination…that bare feet let you exercise every little bone and ligament in your tender tootsies…blah, blah, blah.

I LOVE the freedom of bare feet!

But some people just can’t (or won’t) shed the shoes. And nine times out of ten, they’ll always ask what kind of shoe I recommend for a Nia class?

Basically, any kind of soft-soled shoe that gives you the freedom to move your feet is okay. Storm trooper boots obviously don’t fit the bill and thick, rubber-soled aerobic shoes don’t really cut it either (unless you need them for medical reasons).

My top three choices are ballet slippers, jazz shoes and gymnast slippers.

You can find all three at a theatrical or fitness supply store.
